Precious Moments

Reflections 331-January 2006

It was a typical Monday morning, and my husband and I were in town on business for the humanitarian aid project
we operate in several Balkan nations. By 10 am it was already getting quite hot. The afternoon was supposed to be
even hotter and more uncomfortable, so we were trying to finish everything on our to-do list by noon.
As we parked our camper van, a beggar approached us-not at all uncommon here, since millions are still strug-
gling to overcome the economic effects of the civil war of the early 1990s. We usually give beggars something-a little
money or some humanitarian aid, if we have any with us-but in this instance we paid the man little attention and hurried
on our way.
When we returned some time later, he was waiting for us, unperturbed by our previous rudeness. Since our vehi-
cle has Italian license plates, he said a few words to us in Italian. When I told him that I wasn't Italian but from Scandina-
via, he started to speak to me in Danish. My husband and I began looking in the van for something to give him, and
when he heard us conversing in English, he switched into nearly perfect English. This was no typical beggar.
He explained that he was a refugee from Croatia, having fled from the war years ago with nothing, and that he
was homeless. He and some friends were living in the park across the street. A small gas cooking stove and three stray
dogs by his bedroll testified to the truth of his story. My husband and I felt terrible for the way we had treated this obvi-
ously decent and intelligent man who had fallen on hard times-or anyone, for that matter.
The tragedy of war had brought him and his friends to their present state, but the longer we talked with him the
more we realized that they have adapted admirably well to extremely rough circumstances, living in a makeshift "home"
under the trees in a park and bathing and washing their clothes in the nearby Danube River.
We searched through our camper and gathered some supplies for him and his friends-food, soap and other toilet-
ries, etc., as well as some inspirational reading material-and promised to bring them some clothing the next time we
came to town.
How easy it is in our sometimes too-hurried lives to miss those precious moments when we can do something
special for a fellow human being. We all have much to give others and they have so much to offer us, but too often our
busyness keeps us from receiving that blessing.

The Power in Praise: A Most Unconventional Warfare

In all of history, this had to be one of the most unconventional ways to try to defend a country under siege. Who ever heard of an army being led by a group of singers and musicians? But sing and play they did! Here is the true account from the Bible's book of 2 Chronicles, chapter 20.
Word was rushed to Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, announcing the swift approach of a vast army from Ammon, Moab, and Seir, three kingdoms that had formed an alliance against Judah. Jehoshaphat, knowing that his own army was no match for the invaders, turned to God for help. He proclaimed a time of prayer and fasting, and people from throughout the land poured into the capital to take part.
Then, in the midst of all the people, Jehoshaphat prayed. "O Lord, God of our fathers, are You not God in Heaven? You rule over kingdoms and nations, and power and might are in Your hand. None can withstand You." As the king continued, people's spirits were strengthened. "We know that in the time of calamity, whatever peril it may be, if we stand in Your presence and cry out to You in our distress, You will hear and save us. We have no power against this great army that comes against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You!"
Then a young priest named Jahaziel prophesied with a loud voice, "Thus says the Lord to you: 'Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's!" God had heard and come to answer their prayers.
"You will not need to fight in this battle," God's message through Jahaziel continued. "Position yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you!"
King Jehoshaphat bowed to the ground in worship. The crowd followed the king's lead, while the priests raised their voices to praise the Lord.
The next morning as the troops made preparations for battle, King Jehoshaphat encouraged them. "Believe in the Lord your God, and so shall you be established. Have faith in His prophets, and so shall you have good success."
The king consulted with the people, and it was decided that singers should lead the troops into battle. That daring step of faith showed that they believed God would fight for them.
"Praise the Lord for the beauty of His holiness," Jehoshaphat instructed the singers as they took their position. "Give thanks to the Lord, for His mercy endures forever." They were thanking God in advance for the victory He had promised the day before.
No sooner had they begun to sing and praise than God "set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated."
The Bible doesn't specify what those "ambushes" were, but it does explain that the men of those three invading kingdoms began to fight among themselves. First the men of Ammon and Moab rose up against those of Seir, and when they had destroyed them, the two armies destroyed each other.
When the army of Judah came to a promontory overlooking the battlefield, they saw only dead bodies on the ground. No one had escaped.
Jehoshaphat and his men gathered so many valuables from the bodies that it took them three days to collect them all.
On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, which means "the Valley of Praise," and there they blessed God. Then they returned home with joy, for the Lord had triumphed over their enemies.
The fear of God came on all the neighboring kingdoms when they heard how He had interceded for Judah, and "the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around."
What an amazing testimony to the power of faith, prayer, and praise--and that same power is available to us today. Whenever we face a problem that is too big for us, if we pray with our whole hearts and believe the promises God has given us in His Word, we can then go on the attack against whatever it is that threatens to undo us, praising the Lord and thanking Him by faith for the victory, and He will intercede for us.
Praise is the voice of faith. If you really believe God has heard your prayers, you will start praising Him for the answer, even before you see it. When you're tempted to get down and discouraged, remember the power of praise and look to God.

Matter of Faith and not a religion

I am not a religious person, I am Christian born again filed with His spirit and I do what I supposed to do.
I just heard from an agnostic atheist that we not supposed to share or talk about my believes.
He spent more time trying to indoctrinate me about his religious of unbelieving ..
imposing his theories of nothingness ,instead of my love for God ,Jesus and our neighbors, The curse our loved ones God Jesus and fellow man....
It is time for as Christians to stand up for JESUS not as a religion but pure faith..
Who can stand up for Jesus with me....?

News in Brief!

Our newest project! Mercy’s crèche. While doing the sick visitation rounds Philip noticed a shack that had been badly burned. When enquiring about it he found that a baby had started the fire. The mother was badly burned and hospitalized and the baby was brought to Mercy’s crèche. We found that they keep 40 children in a small Wendy House with a similarly small yard. As you might have noticed the Wendy House looks new. Someone recently donated it as the shack that was previously used leaked water whenever it would rain.

It is a daily challenge to keep the children fed, with dry nappies, etc. There are 10 babies, 7 toddlers and 23 4-5 year olds. Parents are often not able to pay the fees (esp. during the winter months) and often fail to bring sufficient nappies for the day—many of the children are there from 7 am to 7 pm.. When visiting to enquire how we might be of help they first of all mentioned the many food needs and the need for nappies. We noticed that the TV (in the far corner) was on and asked if they needed educational toys, books, etc. They said that at the moment they do h=not have room for anything. They also explained that they want to register as an NPO and in order to qualify must: install 3 toilets (1 for boys, 1 for girls and 1 for the staff); install running water, get a sink, provided a space for just the babies; have a dining room area, etc. At the moment all the tables and chars are outside in the small yard and so can only be used when it is not raining.—Besides that they are 3 tables and 12 chairs short of being able to seat all the children at the same time. We were able to divert some of what we supply for the soup kitchen to them and have also applied for help for them to a couple of companies and are praying for a positive reply this week.

Here is a shot of how our vehicle looks (filled to the brim) after each week’s pick-up—by the way please notice the sacks of bread, a fairly recent contact and a nice little boost to our sandwich project for the high school students, although this is not a regular amount to be counted on weekly it helps as supplying the needed bread regularly is still a challenge! Thankfully Premier Foods helped with 200 loaves again in March. Back to the vehicle: this month it caved in-again! This time the gearbox and clutch went out! As you can imagine we were desperate as we had no clue on how to manage without it! A big heartfelt THANK YOU goes to Owen who lend us his bakkie and Byron who came to our rescue big time by replacing the gearbox and repairing the clutch in record time and free of charge! Thank you so much Byron! It is friends like you that makes our work possible!

Here we are, Philip with tracts and me with the magazine, happily doing our part till we were stopped and asked to put everything away– to our dismay!
